Gammelby Mill - Heritage-listed Watermill near Fredericia

Experience one of Denmark's last working watermills and discover almost 500 years of milling history just outside Fredericia. Today, the beautiful historic building is home to Maja and Benjamin, who regularly open the doors to visitors, offering a unique opportunity to experience this remarkable old mill.

A watermill with roots in the Middle Ages

Gammelby Mill is idyllically located in the Elbodalen Valley near Pjedsted, approximately 10 kilometres west of Fredericia. The present-day mill was built in 1827, but milling has taken place here since before 1500. Together with the farmhouse, the three-winged farm buildings and the mill pond, the mill forms a heritage-listed cultural site that underwent an extensive restoration by Realdania By & Byg between 2021 and 2024.

Would you like to visit Gammelby Mill near Fredericia?

Gammelby Mill is surrounded by beautiful countryside, making it tempting to explore the area. However, as the mill is now a private home, we kindly ask visitors not to enter the buildings outside official opening events. Several times a year, Gammelby Mill opens its doors, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the historic mill and farm.

Events, Spring Market and Christmas Market at Gammelby Mill

A few times each year, Maja and Benjamin welcome visitors to the courtyards, barn and the mill itself during the annual Spring Market in April and Christmas Market in December. Browse stalls from local exhibitors offering everything from ceramics and plants to vintage finds and handmade products, while enjoying coffee and cake in the historic surroundings.

One of the highlights is access to the mill building, where the two overshot waterwheels still power the original millstones, just as they have done for nearly 200 years.

Keep an eye on Gammelby Mill's Facebook page for information about upcoming events.
