KONGESPOR - discover the history of Denmark’s first kings in Fredericia

What do the archaeological finds at Erritsø tell us about Denmark’s early kings? Discover the story at KONGESPOR, a historical exhibition at Fredericia Library.

The exhibition is based on the extensive Viking excavation at Erritsø, where archaeologists have uncovered traces of a large fortified royal residence dating back to the early Viking Age. The finds offer new perspectives on kingship, society and life in Denmark more than 1,000 years ago.

At KONGESPOR, you can explore the history of Denmark’s early kings and discover more about the archaeological finds at Erritsø and the role the area around Fredericia and the Little Belt may have played in Denmark’s early history.

The exhibition is located in the entrance foyer of Fredericia Library, where it can be visited during the library’s opening hours. KONGESPOR opens on Friday 11 September 2026, and admission is free.

What is KONGESPOR?

KONGESPOR is an exhibition about one of Denmark’s most significant Viking Age archaeological discoveries: the remains of a fortified royal residence on a hilltop at Erritsø between Fredericia and Middelfart. The site dates back to around the year 700 and onwards - long before Jelling and Gorm the Old. In 2019, the discovery was named one of the two most important archaeological finds in Denmark that year.

The exhibition was created by the KONGESPOR association in collaboration with local businesses, cultural institutions and volunteers. It builds on research by Vejlemuseerne and their previous special exhibition, “The First Kings”.
