A very special story...
Fredericia is a city that has seen more than most. Wars, kings, refugees and freedom — all within the same fortress town, which still stands to this day.
Fredericia – Denmark’s only royal fortress town
Fredericia was founded as a royal fortress town by Frederik III in 1650. Fredericia Vold, which surrounds the entire city centre, is among the largest and best-preserved ramparts in Northern Europe, and it still remains intact today. Walk along the bastions between cannons and city gates, just as the soldiers once did.
Fredericia’s history is truly unique: the town was granted royal privileges and freedom of religion 200 years before the rest of Denmark, and this is where the Battle of Fredericia took place — one of the most decisive victories in Danish military history.
Experiences
Fredericia is not a city where history is locked away behind glass. It is accessible on the ramparts, in the streets, and underground. Walk, listen, or let a guide take you back to the defining moments.
Did you know that Fredericia was granted freedom of religion 200 years before the rest of Denmark?
Fredericia was once the only town in Denmark where Jews, Catholics, Reformed Christians and Lutherans were allowed to live side by side and do business with one another. The town’s status as a religious sanctuary was the king’s way of attracting people to the new fortress town.
Step into history
Fredericia’s museums and historical sites tell very different stories — from the glory days of the fortress to everyday life on a historic farm museum.
Echoes of history
Fredericia holds more than meets the eye at first glance. Beneath the ramparts lie bunkers from World War II. In the streets of the town, you will find traces of the 17 religious communities that once lived side by side. And in Erritsø, the remains of a Viking fortress can still be found. Choose your own glimpse into the past.
