The Harbour Porpoise in the Canal District– one of Fredericia’s unique wooden sculptures

Did you know that Fredericia collects wooden animals?

Fredericia is home to several charming wooden creatures just waiting to be discovered. In the new Canal District, you’ll find an impressive harbour porpoise gazing out over the Little Belt.

One of the world’s densest harbour porpoise populations

The Little Belt and the harbour porpoise share a special connection. The small whale lives and breeds in the strait, which actually holds one of the world’s densest populations of harbour porpoises. That’s why it made perfect sense to include a harbour porpoise among the wooden sculptures – and to place it overlooking the Little Belt.

Søndervold Naturpark: A city park in the heart of the fortress town

In addition to being near the strait, the harbour porpoise also stands at the entrance to the Canal District's very own urban nature park: Søndervold Naturpark. Søndervold is a wild park where biodiversity thrives. The planting is inspired by local nature areas in Fredericia, focusing on creating a welcoming place for people and a rich habitat for animals and plants.

Go on a wood sculpture hunt in Fredericia

The wood sculptures are one of Fredericia’s attractions and something truly unique to the city. You can currently hunt for five different sculptures, each shaped like an animal that lives in the nature area where it is placed. Meet the woodpecker at Trelde Næs, the owl in Fuglsang Forest, the starling and its chick in Madsbyparken, the sea eagle at Kringsminde near Rands Fjord – and of course the harbour porpoise by the Little Belt.

Wood art created by a local artist from Fredericia

All the beautiful wooden animals were created by local artist Mariane Ladegaard Jensen using recycled wood. Several of the sculptures have a dual function – not only are they decorative, but they also serve as a home for the animals they represent.
